My very first acoustic was Eucalyptus, had never even heard of it before, I thought it was a beeswing mahogany board when I bought it ... made a decent guitar way back .. I saw a couple sweet curly boards at Exotic last week Bob .,.. but I passed them over ....

Couldn't stand it - just ordered two sets. If the outcome is anything like the Curly Padauk I bought, it'll be striking! Thanks, Bob!

Curious if this wood is sometimes referred to as Jarrah? If so, I had a devil of a time trying to bend a set of sides. Looks darker than Jarrah though.

Same genus, different species. Jarrah can be quite dark, but I agree it can also be a bear to bend. Aussies who've bent far more than me claim it varies. Wish I was able to order some of this stuff, Bob, looks wonderful.

Jarrah seems to be prone to cracking with age from what i remember of it.

Bob;
How are ya?

Does the wood have a nice agreeable fragrance?
Or a bitter one?

My comment about Eucalyptus....

I built a tenor guitar out of the Eucalyptus that they sell as "Lyptus" flooring.... This stuff was straight grain and about perfectly quartersawn...

That stuff was some of the easiest working wood I have used in a guitar... It bent about like red oak or soft/straight maple (Flopped onto the form with some heat).. I had no issues with springback...

It worked like Mahogany - except less sensitive to grain direction when planing and routing... There were some sections that looked like they had "Switchy" grain - but they were no more issue than the straight grain sections...

No issues with warping, twisting, cracking or shrinking... It also took glue and finish like a champ...

Sound wise - Mahogany-ish.

The only thing about it was the color initially... Almost pink when fresh off the plane. It took an orangey-brown color almost like newer cherry after finishing.. I assume it oxidizes brown over time. Otherwise - I would recommend that stuff heartily to anybody having trouble finding mahogany-ish wood to use...

I ended up "Keeping" the guitar for about 2-weeks before a local musician had to have it...

All that said - there are about a million varieties of Eucalyptus... They run from Steel to soft mush... They run from horrible shrinkage, cracking, twisting, warping, and shifting to almost none.... They run from Maple/Mahogany workability to unworkable....
